Bristol Joins the WHO Global Network of Age-friendly Communities

Bristol Joins the WHO Global Network of Age-friendly Communities
Posted By: Adam Rees - BAB Programme Director, 6th December

Over the last few years I have regularly updated you on the work that we have been doing to make Bristol more age friendly. We have worked with older people, charities, community group, public sector organisations and others to take a good look at the city and decide what could be better for older people. Older Peoples views have been constantly at the heart of this and this is no better demonstrated than through the fantastic Here We Grow Podcasts.

A few weeks ago Bristol Council, Age UK Bristol and Bristol Ageing Better jointly submitted the application to the World Health Organisation and earlier this week were delighted to be informed that Bristol is now a member of the Global Network of Age-friendly Communities.

This is fantastic news for the city and personally it represents a milestone for myself and the BAB team who have been responsible for putting together the application from submissions made by a huge range of our partners.

This piece of work was not about another “city” title for BAB or Bristol Council. I know (as all of us do) that Bristol still has a way to go before it could truly be age friendly. Joining the Global Network is not the end point for Bristol, but the beginning of journey that must continue to involve older people and other partners in jointly addressing common issues that stop Bristol being Age-friendly.  In our Age-friendly strategy, we have started to identify the most common issues, and over the next few months we will be convening opportunities for us to jointly finds solutions to these.

At the end of January we will be hosting a  small celebration of our membership and also hope to launch an Age-friendly Challenge Fund that could support partners in trying ideas to tackle the most common age friendly. We will be sending out more details of the event before Christmas and will be launching the fund at this event in late January.

In the meantime, please accept my thanks for your support on this work and I hope to see you involved further over the next few years.
