For those of you who don’t know, I’m from New York originally and I came to Bristol to study for a masters in 2010. I got to know the city and had an amazing time.
I wasn’t expecting to feel lonely because everything was so new and exciting. And yet, when the course ended and my new friends moved away I realised how isolated I felt living in a city halfway across the world from close friends and family.Loneliness is a very personal experience that varies person to person. It also has a lot of stigma attached to it despite being such a universal experience.
That’s why I’m telling you about my experience. This year’s Loneliness Awareness Week is focused on the theme of reducing the stigma of loneliness and opening up conversations around it. If you follow our Facebook and Twitter account you’ll have seen we’ve been sharing quotes from the BAB team about a time when they felt lonely and we've had a real mixture of responses which just goes to show you can feel lonely at any time in your life.
BAB is set up to prevent loneliness and social isolation in people over fifty but we believe it has had a knock on effect of raising awareness of the subject across Bristol. Every week is a loneliness awareness week with BAB as we learn more from each project about what works in Bristol!
