The Celebrating Age Festival is back! If you'd like to be involved in the festival the deadline to submit an application is 9th August. This year's festival will take place throughout the whole month of October and include a variety of sessions for older people.
We spoke to our Kick-Start panel to see if they had any experiences to share about the festival from previous years and Judith Brown, a past chair of the festival and committee member from 2007 - 2017, shared the below memories:
"In 2007 the then Older People's Partnership Board came up with the idea of a Festival Celebrating Age, and BOPF member Pat Roberts, sadly now deceased, was the first Chair of the Committee. BOPF was involved from the start, and we decided to have a theme each year, to reward unsung heroes in the community, to have an Arts Competition to show what older people could do;and to give people a chance to see all the activities and organisations there were in Bristol. Held in the Council House, the first one was just a day, but it grew until lots of communities put on activities for a week, and then over two.
My particular favourites over the years have been Acker Bilk's Band, (we got up and danced in the Colston Hall,), fashions shows where everything you wore had to be bought in a charity shop, Bill Oddie talking about his life and birds, and the awards to our unsung heroes. I gave the first one to Bill Nicholls, then in his nineties, after a lifetime of community work.
Now the Celebration is being revived to carry on showing what people can do, and to show the whole community Older Age can be great."
