Healthy Together Clinic
An Age UK Bristol case study

A participants story: Barbara

1. How did you find out about the project and why did you get involved?

I was coming here to get my legs looked after and thought I want to give something back after how well I was treated. It is something good to have going on here every week and I thought this is something I definitely want to support to help keep going.

2. What do you like the most about this project?

I like getting to know the people who come here, there are some really lovely people and you get to know them really well as some of them are here for months.

Some people aren’t always comfortable coming to a new place and they take a while to settle in, but we make them feel welcome and it’s really good when you start to see them chatting away with everyone.

3. What has changed for you since you started volunteering? Have you learnt anything new?

Coming here you really start to realise how maybe you aren’t on your own with your health problems and there are lots of people in the same boat as you. There are lots of people with bad legs and everyone here understands how difficult that can be.

Also a lot of them coming here don’t get the chance to get out to see people and you realise how that can have a negative effect on their physical health.

4. What would you say to others who are thinking of getting involved?

I think everyone should get involved with projects like this and hopefully we will see more in the future. You do feel part of something here and everyone is always made to feel welcome.

A participants story: Shirely

1. How did you find out about the project and why did you get involved?

I started out as a patient at the clinic and when I finished my treatment I knew I wanted to stay part of it and give something back.

Being a retired nurse I know the difficulties of the job and really appreciate the hard work that they do as clinicians. I am very lucky to have had such a great service from the NHS and I think of this as my way of saying thank you. But I also enjoy it! I look forward to coming each week and it makes me feel good to do my bit.

2. What do you like the most about this project?

I like being part of the community here, you see people they come here and sometimes are really struggling but they know they will always be greeted with a smile, have their cup of tea and cake, and they can talk about whatever is troubling them.

Most of the time we can help people and point them in the right direction if they need extra help. But a lot of the time they just want someone to talk to and some support in a comfortable setting. It sounds simple but you really see the benefits of it with time and it is rewarding to see people improve the more they come here.

3. What has changed for you since you started volunteering? Have you learnt anything new?

I definitely see the benefit of taking part myself. I enjoy coming every week! I’ve seen just how many people are on their own but also much things can change by just doing one small thing like this regularly.

4. What would you say to others who are thinking of getting involved?

I’d say come and get involved! It’s a great project and you feel part of a family down here.
