CDOP Greater Fishponds

This project was run by The Care Forum

What was the project?

Greater Fishponds Community Champions was a project aimed at supporting older people to get involved with groups and activities in their area and to make friends through shared interests. The project was about bringing people together, raising awareness of what activities and services were available, and developing new activities where there were gaps.

What did the project do?

This project was funded for three years and involved work  with the neighbourhoods of Hillfields, Frome Vale and Eastville to develop activities and to develop specific community roles:

Community Champions
The aim of this role wass to be an active citizen in the community. Participants were given full support as needed to work in their community, identifying gaps in services and developing projects and activities, which will support people to make connections with other local people and groups. Some of the activities the Community Champions participated in included:
• Door knocking to get to know neighbours and identify needs
• Setting up regular social sessions in the libraries and other locations
• Inter-generational stay and plays
• Setting up a one off event.

Considerate Friends
This element of the project was completed in partnership with the Carers Support Centre. Volunteers were trained and supported to visit local premises, facilities, activities and services. Volunteers made assessments and recommendations to ensure the venues and services were age appropriate and carer friendly.

Why did BAB fund it?

In September 2016, BAB launched the Blueprint for Community development, setting out the projects that it would commission across Bristol. Greater Fishponds had been one of areas that BaB had the least amount of information about at the beginning of the programme. The BAB Community Researchers undertook a fantastic asset mapping report of the area for us and we were keen to look at how a community development project could build on this information.

Project news

Local residents informed the activities that were set up through this project by supporting volunteers to become Community Champions (‘Good Neighbours’).  Although the volunteer roles have not continued post-BAB funding some groups have been made sustainable beyond the life of the project because there was real interest and enthusiasm from residents. The Community Development Officer connected some of the groups with BAB Kick-start project helping them to access additional funding to enhance and maintain activities.
