Community Navigator

‘It is often difficult to find out what is available/going on for older people’, quote from older person aged 50-65.

When we were writing the BAB bid to the Big Lottery Fund we spoke to over 2,000 older people about the plans and 14% of them suggested ‘more information about local activities’ was the best way of stopping older people getting lonely.

As part of the literature review for the BAB bid, we found a range of different Community Navigator models and discovered that are an effective means of tackling isolation.

Community Navigators are staff or volunteers who help individuals to connect and utilise a range of services and relevant organisations

We are currently:

  • Funding our three Community Navigator Projects -  North, South and Central East  - which launched in September 2017. The Community Navigators Project has reached 408 participants and recruited 37 volunteers as of February 2018. You can find out more about the Community Navigators at their website

We have already:

  • Run a workshop in July 2016 to invite partners to explore different models of Community Navigator projects that are already running across the UK and to stimulate thinking about the approach that might work in different areas of the city.
  • Appointed 3 delivery partners (North, South and Central East) to deliver a model of a Community Navigator service that works for their areas. These projects will launch their work in the Autumn. Click here to read North Bristol Advice Centre's press release, one of our appointed delivery partners.
  • Organised a Delivery Partner Network meeting for our delivery partners to share learning, ideas about how to engage the most isolated older people and how best to work towards achieving the BAB outcomes for lonely and isolated older people and sustainability of their projects.
