Deaf and Hard of Hearing People – present but unheard and uninvolved? What we can do together to create a more inclusive community

Delivered by: Centre for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People

Course description

Deafness affects around 70% of older people. Deafness has a profound effect on people's communication, on their social lives and on their emotional wellbeing. Many Deaf and Hard of Hearing People feel excluded from activities and become socially isolated. They end up being labelled ‘hard to reach’. But with the right information and tools Deaf and Hard of Hearing People can still continue to be a valuable asset and enjoy participating in their community. On this workshop you will learn about the barriers that Deaf and Hard of Hearing people face, discover what you already do that is inclusive and how you can support deaf people in all your work.

The session will include:

  • Communication with deaf and hard of hearing people
  • Technological solutions (hearing aids, induction loops etc.)
  • How to support deaf and hard of hearing people on a limited budget.

The workshop will be delivered by David Melling CEO of the Bristol Centre for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People. David is deaf himself and will bring the workshop to life with real stories from the local deaf and hard of hearing community.
