Bristol Ageing Better’s first learning network around ageing and wellbeing was a great success, with more than 40 stakeholders attending. The event was designed to explore how positive wellbeing and good mental health contribute to combating isolation and loneliness in older people.
Wellbeing is one of the 16 projects that BAB is working on and falls into our remit for supporting individuals to live fulfilling lives. So far this has included running therapy groups for specific demographics, including carers and those who face language barriers.
Bristol Ageing Better was able to showcase the learning which has taken place as a result of five pilot schemes at the event. These were run by Wellspring Healthy Living Centre, Carers Support Centre, Happy City, Second Step and Oasis-Talk, who were awarded a total of £75,000 to trial different approaches.
All of the pilots tried out different approaches to solution-focused brief interventions, designed to support older people whose emotional problems contribute to their loneliness.
Attendees at the learning network event were asked to think about their experiences and use those to contribute to a vision for older people’s wellbeing in Bristol, as well as identifying existing services in the area and discussing what they would like to see funded.
The questions which were posed stimulated some lively discussion, and food for thought for the BAB delivery team. Programme Manager Carly Urbanski said: “We had a brilliant mix of people in the room with different opinions and experiences, and the feedback from this event has been really useful to us.
“We’re looking forward to taking the learning and insight that we have gained from the event and using it alongside additional evidence based reviews to be able to advise our commissioning process and future projects.”
The work carried out will be used to inform future decisions about commissioning, including a large invitation to tender which BAB will be making on October 2nd.
