Bristol-based charity, Alive!, which improves the wellbeing of older people in care settings through meaningful activities, has been selected as the delivery partner for a ground-breaking Bristol Ageing Better (BAB) community development project for older people in care homes.

Ruth Richardson, BAB Programme Manager, announced the award today following a competitive bidding process, saying “Alive! have a great track-record of delivering innovative projects in care homes across the region. We are excited to see local organisations work in partnership to ensure older people are empowered and involved in decisions affecting their care home communities.”

Alive! Chief Executive, Simon Bernstein, said "We are delighted to announce our appointment as the lead partner for BAB’s Communities of Interest project for care homes. We are particularly excited that the project will empower older people to choose the forms of engagement they want as well as shape the project's development over the course of the next two years. It will also embed best practice through the support and training Alive! will provide to care staff and local communities to continue their involvement in this work beyond the life of the project."

Working in partnership with Growing Support, Alive! will extend its existing community relationships, by using the many skills and assets which exist across Bristol, to bring meaning, purpose and joy to the lives of older people living in four care homes in the city. “We hope to bring the generations together using paintbrushes, spades and technology, or whatever it takes to improve the quality of life of older people in care homes”, said Simon. Alive! are thrilled to be working in partnership with Growing Support and their inventive approach to working with older people.

Dale Cranshaw, Growing Support’s Director, said:

“We are really excited to be working with Alive! on such an innovative, service user led project. Growing Support has been involving the community in care homes for a number of years and we hope to both share that knowledge and develop new best practice in this area through the course of the project. Loneliness, social isolation and inactivity all too often affect older care home residents and we hope that this project will find further solutions to these challenges for the future. For example we hope to explore how the wider care home community can be engaged to support residents to take part in sociable, nature-based activities in local green spaces."

The project will run from April this year until 2019, by which time relationships within the Bristol community will be flourishing. Older people will feel empowered, more able to socialise with others in their home, and will feel more connected to the wider community. Most importantly, residents will feel more able to influence the decisions that affect them, resulting in happier, healthier care home environments.
