Our lead partner, Age UK Bristol has made the decision to defer their face-to-face services until it is appropriate to resume normal working conditions. Age UK Bristol are in the process of adapting their services from a social distancing perspective, e.g. over the phone or online. An important aspect of their work is encouraging people to stay connected in this period, as we’ll all need each other now more than ever.
For BAB, this change has meant that a number of our staff are now working from home but everyone is still available to contact should you need support. As projects reporting to BAB we recognise that this is an unusual circumstance for each of you and we are happy to be flexible in our approach where necessary. In the coming days, I’ll be getting in touch with you individually to discuss, however please feel free to email me before then if there is anything you need to talk through.
In collaboration with other local organisations, we are setting up a new helpline for older people, particularly those who cannot access the internet and are isolated at this time. So far this service is looking to provide practical and emotional support to older people, including help to access shopping, befriending, counselling, virtual activities and signposting to other initiatives taking place across the city. At the moment we are coordinating the immediate practical support and will share more details with you as soon as we can. In the meantime, we welcome offers of support or ideas that could connect into the service and are happy to discuss these in due course.
As BAB partners we value your commitment to supporting older people over the last 5 years and we recognise that this is an opportunity to get creative and adapt the way in which we respond to social isolation and loneliness. We have seen so much kindness and community spirit in the last few weeks and it would be wonderful to be able to share this positivity widely. With this in mind, we’d love to hear what you have been doing at your individual projects and organisations in response to the virus. Are you doing something that has been particularly successful in alleviating people’s fears? Or, have you seen others doing something that has inspired you?
Please get in touch with us if you have any suggestions for how the BAB partnership can support older people during this period. We are interested in hearing your ideas and will support and promote them where we can.
