Community Champions, an exciting new BAB-funded project in Fishponds, is looking for people to get involved in their community in Hillfields, Frome Vale and Eastville. The project is about helping older people to make connections with groups and other local people to create greater opportunities for everyone.
The project is searching for local people who want to make a difference to the lonely and isolated members of their communities.
From helping to start up activities to getting to know neighbours and finding likeminded people locally, The Care Forum is recruiting, training and supporting volunteers across the area to be Community Champions and Considerate Friends.
Both roles are aimed at ensuring the neighbourhoods covered by the project can be vibrant places with a wide range of social and cultural activities and opportunities for engagement.
Whether volunteers want to offer time befriending, set up a friendship group or support any other activities they think the community would like, they're encouraged to get involved.
Community Champions will be fully trained and supported to get out into their community, identify any gaps and develop projects with other community members to fill those gaps, which could be anything from simple friendship groups to cooking, gardening or exercise.
Considerate Friends will involve volunteers in supporting premises, facilities, activities and services to be more age friendly, by visiting them and giving advice and support, helping ensure they are welcoming to everyone.
Claire Littlejohn, Project Worker, said: “This is such an exciting project as anything could happen and it really is up to the community to decide what they want in terms of opportunities for older people to meet and get involved. If you live in the area and are over 50 get in touch and let us know what you think.”
In addition to volunteering roles, The Greater Fishponds Community Champions project will be overseen by a steering group made up of local people who will guide the direction of the project. Local businesses and services also have an important part to play in signposting people to the project, by displaying posters and distributing leaflets.
