The popular Kick-Start funded Growing Bolder Bristol group starts again on Wednesday 11th October and spaces are still available for anyone aged over 55 from Bristol.
Growing Bolder started life nearly three years ago as a group of older people who came together to talk about the joys and challenges of later life, using writing, art and simple creative exercises. The object was to “grow bolder” by challenging themselves to try new things.
This evolved into Growing Bolder, a BAB funded group, and since getting off the ground the group has done some daring things, including running a concert at the Avenue House Care Home in north Bristol where they sang and read out some poems and writings and encouraged the residents to join in.
The event was a great success, and the Mayor of Bristol even made an appearance. The group also made a short film based on their thoughts about ageing and the loneliness that can come with life changes.
During the autumn course of Growing Bolder workshops members of the group will be looking at aspects of relationships as they age.
This includes things like how to keep friendships strong; how to deal with difficult issues around divorce; illness or bereavement and how to stay strong and outward-looking in older age.
The group is led by Mary Everett and Barbara Bloomfield, two women over 55 who have worked as counsellors and therapists for many years and are experts in the field of couple and family relationships.
They try to provide a warm and friendly space for attendees to learn more about themselves and what makes them happy. Barbara says, “You don’t have to be arty to enjoy this, it’s for everyone!”
The groups are held in Bishopston, North Bristol and will be as follows:
Wed, 11 October, 11 - 3pm
"Relationships : Couples, Friendships and Making New Friends"
Wed, 18 October, 11 - 3pm
"Develop your Social Life And Avoid Loneliness"
Wed, 8 Nov, 11 - 3pm
"Dreams and Goals for Later Life: Passion and Politics"
