Partner Case Study: Happy & Active in Knowle West

Happy and Active in Knowle West 2017, organised by Knowle West Media Centre and Knowle West Healthy Living Centre

About the project

Happy and Active in Knowle West was funded through the Bristol Ageing Better Age Friendly Community Chest – part of the 2017 Celebrating Age Festival.

It was an event which took place to showcase the variety of activities on offer for older people in the area. The aim of the event was to encourage older people to be more active, take up a new skill or join a group, helping to reduce isolation and lonliness.

Lots of groups offering opportunities for older people had stalls, including film clubs for older people, mental health charities and other providers offering help with healthy living. Attendees were able to book a health check or take party in craft activities and other workshops.

A free afternoon tea was also included in the event, with sandwiches, salad, scones and fruit on offer and the chance to sit down for a chat. Attendees were also able to find out more about low-cost community transport schemes, which can mitigate the transport issues faced by older people with poor mobility.

Event feedback

June, 86 – “I liked the food and the computer skills class. Lewis showed me things I didn’t know – about politics and foxes – on the internet. We also found my relations on a video. I’m teaching myself at the moment.”

Mike, 80 – “I enjoyed looking at what other people were doing, so many practical things interest me like the Factory stall and the SPHERE university stall. I would like to see more practical things on offer, like understanding computer drawing programmes.”

Iris, 80 – “I liked the singalong and watching other people dancing. It was a very friendly event with people welcoming you in. The only thing that could be improved would be that I would like it more often please!”

Ann, 78 – “The event was very good. I liked the Grandparent group where we shared our memories of being grandmothers and the singing which we joined in.”

Impact and learning

In addition to positive feedback from attendees, groups running stalls reported that they were able to recruit new members. All attendees asked for feedback said they enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the event.
