Bristol Ageing Better is bringing back its partnership meetings – a chance for people and professionals committed to improving the lives of older people in our city to come together. We’ll share positive examples of work being done, discuss challenges and solutions, and explore ways to strengthen each others’ work. Over the next year, we’ll be focusing on the Age-Friendly City; a framework outlined by the World Health Organisation which Bristol adopted in 2018. Each of our meetings will focus on one of the eight age-friendly domains, with the second meeting looking at social participation.
Being able to have the right amount and type of social contact and relationships improves our health and helps us feel a sense of belonging and value in our communities. Later life can offer the opportunity to spend more time socially, but significant events, changes in health and non-inclusive spaces can all create a disparity between the social opportunities we would like and what we have. The restrictions of the past year, as well as the collective trauma and anxiety caused by the pandemic, have also affected many people's social health, particularly for those who were forced to shield or take extra precautions to protect themselves from the virus. In this session, we'll be discussing how older people can be supported to safely return to social and leisure activities, and what voluntary sector and community-based organisations should consider when working with people who have experienced significant loneliness and isolation.
Joining us to talk about the work they are doing to provide age-friendly opportunities for social interaction are:
- Tracey Edwards-Brown, Engagement and Research Coordinator + Place Maker at Eastside Community Trust
- Daniel Waghorn, Community Development Worker at Barton Hill Settlement
- A speaker from Changes Bristol
- Bianca Rossetti, Age-Friendly Project Officer at BAB
There will be time for an audience Q&A and for participants to contribute their own insights and experiences during a workshop session.
